Identify and describe an example from the research literature of a health communication program for motivating behavior change among clinicians or other health professionals

Professional medical communication are applications of health communication, theories, models, and practices to programs that look to encourage behavior and the social settings of professionals who are in charge of providing health care (Schiavo, 2014). This process is used to implement planned programs for physicians, nurses, therapists and other health care providers which sole purpose is to promote medical and health practices, create innovative medical ideas and ethical practices of care, make public of medical discoveries and beliefs and policies, change medical priorities and improve health policy changes (Schiavo, 2014).

Clinical practices and policies are put in place to develop partnerships with patients to find open pathways to communicate and address patients’ concerns in regards to concerns on asthma and asthma treatment. The literature on patient provider communication influences adherence to asthma medication proposes that providers must take on a communication style that improves motivation and trust which will support patients’ commitment to asthma medication regimens (Young et al., 2017). To make a proposal on behavior change, different ranges of communication skills are implemented. These communication skills inspire and reinforce self-management behavior for patients (Young et al., 2017). The theory of motivational interviewing is a theory clinical technique and counseling psychotherapy that help evaluate patients’ foundation for motivation and supporting them to conform to change (Young et al., 2017).

Why was this an effective strategy? What was the outcome?

This was an effective strategy as the communication policies created positive pathways between patients and provider communication outcomes (Young et al., 2017). Communication strategies strengthen patients’ trust and motivated them to take the required asthma medication. Findings revealed that getting individuals to change behavior could be hard. Self-management skills can have a huge impact on physiologic status, symptoms, and physiologic functioning and quality of life (Young et al., 2017). Additional outcomes are that training programs should be put in place to bring a level of awareness among health care providers to improve patient loyalty and simplify the acceptance of applying communication skills into practice. (Young et al., 2017).
