For an Operating Room Nurse patient
safety is first and foremost. Our patients are asleep and vulnerable.
They are laying in
positions for hours sometimes and cannot adjust themselves to prevent cramps,
nerve damage and pressure wounds. The first area that evidence based practice
has improved patient outcomes is positioning equipment , proper training and ongoing teaching . Research proves that the patient’s anatomic and
physiological alterations need to be identified, associated with the type of
anesthesia, procedure type and surgical time he/she will be submitted to, so
that the positioning is adequate and does not cause postoperative
complications. Positioning equipment assists in keeping
the patient in a neutral position much like they
would be if awake , padded a t all bony prominences or areas of constant pressure a nd
prevent damage to their nerves, joints, back and skin (AORN, 2017) .
The second area that evidence based
practice has improved outcomes for operating room patients is with prep
solution and Operating Room fires. We use a produced called Chlora -prep that has an alcohol base.
The company for Chlora -prep states and we receive constant
in-servicing that the product needs 3 full minutes dry time
to reduce the flammability of the product . In
addition to the dry time
of 3 minutes, there should be no pooling of the prep solution on the
skin which is a common factor in previous OR fires. W
hen the cautery pencil
(ignition source) , which is used to control bleeding makes contact with skin bearing
the prep solution (fuel) , most specifically
when it is wet there is an extremely high risk
of fire. ( Jones, et.al., 2017).
